The Mako is the quintessential shark. It is probably the most graceful of all sharks; the most beautifully proportioned, the fastest, the most strikingly colored, the most spectacular game fish, and one of the meanest-looking animals on earth. Up for auction is a clearly titled 1974 quintessential Corvette Shark perhaps one of the remaining specialty bodied Mako or Manta Corvettes. So when you think about sharks in nature and automotive history, few cars stand out like the shark inspired GM C3 Corvettes. The late sixties (60s) and early seventies (70s) were very stylish years for the Corvette. This era of Sharks were shaped so that it made them look like they were in motion, even while sitting still. There is always some confusion about the Mako Shark II based on all the different photos you see in the magazines and internet sites. There were, in fact, only two primary versions of the Mako Shark II and then the Manta Ray version. So according to GM there were only three basic versions with quite a few re-paints and minor changes over the years on their prototypes. Additionally, these prototypes combined with quality specialty shops such as John Silva and Baldwin Motion performance lines, its unknown how many of these classics are still around. Does anyone really know? According to research and Corvette lore, the Sting Ray, Mako Shark, and Manta Ray are all rich in design history with production aspirations. Out of these, the Sting Ray (excluding 1959) was the only one that made it to the production line, while others were only built to be prototypes. In fact, a very low number of GM prototypes have ever been built, primarily due to an estimated GM cost of $2.5 ? 3.0 million dollars to tool up and build. So needless to say this particular Corvette is a much sought after commodity in the automotive collector market. Seems funny to have to say this but for you ?Hot Wheel collectors? this is the real big version of what your looking for; this is not a auction for a toy car. Just on appearance alone this Corvette appears to be a GM prototype, or a mix between a Baldwin Motion, John Silva, Manta Ray and Mako Corvette body. Especially, the Manta rear design and the front look of a Mako shark Corvette. To be honest the heritage on this classic is obscured by time and circumstances. It was found a little over two years ago in an aircraft storage yard in Northeastern Florida. By the way, needless to say we do not have all the history of this car before the rescue, so if you know this car please fill free to email or call us any information you may know about it. Anyone who knows the history of the Mako and Manta Corvettes and have followed them over the years know that were very few of these classics made or found for that matter for sale on the market today. By the way investors this one would be a great investment under the current state of the economy. Especially since a replica of this same car was sold at Barrett-Jackson auction for $500,000. Understanding that in the seventies Motion performance and John Silva production was either selling these modified cars new, or modifying customer?s cars, or selling custom body parts. It is unclear whether this one fits any one of the above categories. We have spoken to Mr. Motion without reaching any conclusions. What we do know is that this specialty bodied Corvette is made of a quality fiberglass body and it definitely is not a homebuilt car or kit. The vehicle came mechanically partially assembled, with a running 350 motor, no brakes, and in need of a paint and interior refresh. The person who sold the car believed it was from GM?s prototype shop and priced it accordingly. Historically, GM was fairly generous in putting these cars out on display and made lots of changes and variations in the Mako in attempt to meet a market demand over the years. This one definitely could lead one to believe it might be one of those, but we could not validate the seller?s story. So we did the reasonable thing and bought this rare Corvette home to Ocala, Florida anyway as a restoration project and show car. Today, with a tremendous amount of resources, work and effort it is a driving and street legal Mako/Manta Corvette that has been meticulously pulled together into what you see today. A fully functional Corvette you can drive daily but would most likely be something to put away for posterity. This rare Corvette has been entered in a few Auto shows here in Central Florida and already has numerous trophies to its credit. As you can see this 1974 Corvette is a derivative of the 1968 through 70?s (seventies) Mako Shark II and Manta Ray in styling. This one was truly a Mako inspired show car with the narrow waist or coke-bottle shape and pronounced fenders. Particularly, this classic incorporates many of the features and details found in the XP-755 and the other Mako Shark show cars. Specifically, this vehicle has the streamlining, the distinctive more pointed nose, the two additional brake lights in the rear (six total), the menacing headlights, a aluminum grill that represents a intimidating mouth, distinctive Mako hood scoops, the non-production doors (notice - raised in front to match hood body line), hood with a custom rear area over the wipers that match up precisely to the doors, t-tops with sharp body lines that match roof lines, the sharp-edged fender lines, highly styled front clip, and upswept tail and fins. This one does not have the louvered rear window treatment, which we understand was done away with for the Manta versions. The original Manta Ray, which would be the last shark-theme prototype, was longer, and sleeker than the Mako 2. It had an extended rear fascia and a roofline that still came to a point like the previous sharks. It also contained side pipes, and also had the blue/white shark paint job. The paint on this Shark was also inspired by the Mako shark with blue-gray upper surface and gently blending into a white underside like the fish. The new interior is customized with a blue gray seat trim with an embroidered shark on each the driver and passenger head rest. The steering column has tilt wheel as well as the telescopic features. It has power steering; power brakes; power windows; no air-conditioning; AM/FM GM Corvette radio (not working); new carpet; a functional rear air vent; and side pipes (not functional). The wheels are Western Turbo ?30-blade? wheels wrapped in Uniroyal tiger paw GTS tires with about 90% of the thread remaining. Documented mileage on this car is 34,954. The Vin is 1Z37J4S424875. Mechanically this car is ready to roll and drive to the next car show. However, this show piece is generally garage kept and moved by trailer to car shows to insure this rare Corvette gives its best showing. The frame and normal areas where rust resides on Corvettes of this year are solid and very clean. No rust issues. The original Mako Shark sported a 427 cubic inch Mark IV (396) big block engine and a turbo-hydromatic three speed automatic transmission; it was later changed to a ZL-1 style 427 motor. The Manta Ray received power from an all-aluminum ZL-1 engine. The ZL-1 engine became an option on the 1969 Corvettes. Only two were produced, because it doubled the price of the car, which nobody at that time was willing to pay. Unlike the original Mako and Manta sharks this shark sports an economical 350 4-speed transmission however; we have a 427 and 454 Corvette motor available for an additional cost. Looking back, I don't know of many other show cars of this era which has made such an impact or have stood the test of time as well as the Corvette Sharks. Is this the end of the shark influenced Corvettes? Nobody knows, but the legend of the cars will live on. Whether or not the current and future GM Styling Department will be able to build a big time shark inspired dream car, like the Mako Shark 2, is a mystery... What we do know is that this one will definitely be one of the last ones like it posted or sold on eBay. Bid to own! se non ricordo male, il colore ? stato copiato dalla colorazione della pelle di un particolare squalo che era "imbalsamato" nell'ufficio del responsabile del progetto...ma siccome il team addetto alla verniciatura non riusciva mai a ricreare il colore preciso dello squalo, ed il responsabile continuava a fargli riverniciare l'auto...una notte i verniciatori entrarono nell'ufficio del responsabile e verniciarono lo squalo in modo che fosse uguale all'auto...almeno...cos? si narra...

se non ricordo male, il colore ? stato copiato dalla colorazione della pelle di un particolare squalo che era "imbalsamato" nell'ufficio del responsabile del progetto...ma siccome il team addetto alla verniciatura non riusciva mai a ricreare il colore preciso dello squalo, ed il responsabile continuava a fargli riverniciare l'auto...una notte i verniciatori entrarono nell'ufficio del responsabile e verniciarono lo squalo in modo che fosse uguale all'auto...almeno...cos? si narra...
